Happy February!

Happy February! I can't believe we are already more than half way through the month! We've had a lot of rain here in Oregon these last few weeks, but today and the next several days are filled with sun! I do enjoy winter and the snow, but I am tired of the cold rainy days!

Speaking of the snow, my family and I have had several opportunities to head to the mountain this winter. Here's a pic of us a few weeks ago :)

Mt. Hood is just gorgeous during every season! My husband and I were able to complete a 3 day hike around it last summer and saw so many beautiful parts of this mountain.

Okay, now for some school related things, and some new and updated freebies!

I have finally finished my sight word bingo sets. April and May have been added to my store and I have also added a bundle that includes all 9 sets.

This last month and a half my first graders have been working through their place value unit in math. I decided to add in some additional support and practice this year since this is such a heavy duty unit, and I really wanted my kids to have a firm grasp on place value.

One skill that often can be a struggle is finding 10 more and 10 less than a number. Before I gave my kiddos this lesson from our math program, we spent a day practicing with Reusable Write and Wipe Pockets. I got mine several years ago at Lakeshore and absolutely love them! I use them in small reading groups and also during partner work in math. Each pocket was filled with the two worksheets below. You can click on them to download for free!

We began by watching a few place value Khan Academy videos before I handed out the mats. I LOVE Khan Academy. Their videos are wonderful! After watching a few video clips we used our tens rods and ones pieces on the side with the tens and ones worksheet. We did lots of practice showing numbers and what 10 more/less looks like. Eventually I handed out dry erase markers and we completed the 10 more 10 less worksheet. When we got to the last part of the worksheet, I had my kiddos write their own number and also write 10 more/less than the number.

I made a few review worksheets for our greater than and less than lessons. These have been in my store, but have been recently updated with different fonts. You can go HERE to download or just click on the pictures below!

After several days of learning and practicing using the symbols, we used our reusable wipe off mats again and practiced with partners during a whole group lesson.

There are so many ways you could use these with wipe off mats.

I began this activity using the page with the larger symbols. We would start with the first symbol and I would show my students two numbers. Then they would write them on the correct side of the symbol. When we got to the second worksheet, I would give them one number, and they would need to put their own number following the symbol. The last box they could create their own greater than, less than, or equal to statement. If you would like these, just click HERE or the pics below!

Digraphs, Diphthongs, and Freebies OH MY!

Happy Sunday! Hope you are all enjoying your weekend and to those of you that are already on summer vacation, ENJOY! I hope you find some much needed time to relax!
My first graders and I have a few more weeks due to several snow days. We still have lots to do and I have several fun themed activities planned for my first graders!
This last week my first graders went to the zoo for our annual zoo field trip. SO MUCH FUN! We had absolutely perfect weather (which for the last several years has been not spectacular) 70+ degrees and was filled with lots of zoo themed activities. See below for several ideas I incorporated into my stations and a few zoo themed math freebies :).

48 SMALL PICTURE/WORD CARDS : These cards can be used for sorting.

SORTING MATS & RECORDING SHEETS: These sorting mats can be used for sorting the small sorting cards above. After sorting, students can record words on recording sheets.

24 RHYME CARDS (MATCHING GAME): These cards can be used for a matching game. Players begin by placing face down. First player flips two cards over. If they rhyme, the player keeps both cards. If they do not rhyme, flip the player flips both cards over and it’s the next player’s turn. Winner is the player with the most cards.

I HAVE WHO HAS CARDS: 30 cards are included in this set. These cards contain pictures and words. If playing with less than 30 players, you could give players additional cards.

48 LARGE PICTURE/WORD CARDS: These cards could be used in several different ways.

Here are two ideas:
*For matching, cut them apart so the words are separate and match the words with the pictures. These cards fit nicely in a pocket chart.
*To play a matching game, distribute word cards evenly between players. Place picture cards face down. First player flips over a picture card. If he/she has the matching word, he/she picks up the card. If not a match, flip card over and it’s the next player’s turn. First player with all of their matches complete is the winner.

Since these last few weeks in math have been a review of what we've been doing all year, I made some review worksheets that focused on double digit addition and subtraction. I also created some place value review. You can find this entire freebie {HERE}!

Zoo Math Themed Worksheets

We've been doing a lot of opinion writing pieces this month. I wanted to share a freebie that I created to go with an opinion writing piece my first graders did a few weeks ago. After reading Hey Little Ant we created two anchor charts. One listed reasons why the boy SHOULD squish the and and the other listed reasons why the boy SHOULD NOT squish the ant. I also included several zoo themed stations this last week!

If you're following my stations that I incorporate into my reading block, here's what we started last week, and will finish up in a few days! This is our last set of stations for the school year. Several stations this week are zoo themed.

Happy Spring! We just LOVE this time of year, and definitely are enjoying the mild temperatures that we continue to have! We wanted to share an update with you all that we have added to our

We've recently added a large cone along with large scoops to make a class display.

You can print student names or numbers and attach them to the scoops as they move up. Here's a picture of how we display our addition cone in our classrooms. Each child has a number printed on a small piece of paper. As he/she masters an addition fact, their number gets pinned next to the current fact he/she is working on. A subtraction cone will be added next week since one of our first graders has made it to subtraction!

Food Group Fun & A Math Freebie

Hope you're all having a FANTASTIC February!

We sure are enjoying the warmer weather we've been having here! It feels like it's spring.

Although we definitely like the warmer weather, we sure wish we'd get a little snow this winter.

Maybe toward the end of the month? It's pretty unusual for our area to not even get a few snow days so our fingers are crossed!

Place value was our math focus last month, and since our kiddos needed some extra practice using the greater than & less than symbols we created a few extra practice pages.

Here's a great book that we read to introduce the food groups. It's full of great information surrounding each food group, and has great info about portions and filling your plate with healthy foods.

Happy July! Summer is definitely keeping us busy, but we are enjoying some Oregon sunshine this week! The weather has been BEAUTIFUL here!

We are currently in the process of updating several of our products that are currently in our TpT Store and have some new ones that we're adding as well this summer! Planning For Place Value

Even though we've still got a few more months before we return, lesson planning is still on our minds! One chapter in our math program that we feel our kiddos often need extra support in is place value. If you're looking for some ideas then this is the post for you! Place Value Numbers 10-19

This place value set focuses on numbers 10-19. There are 6 different worksheets. Each worksheet has two versions. There are also two games and six blank masters.

Place Value Number Match

This place value game focuses on numbers 10-19

and is also great extra practice for your students.

Students place the cards in three piles: numbers, tens frames, and cubes. Then they match the correct three cards together.

After all of the cards have been matched, students recored their matches on the worksheet. See example above.

Here's a a place value activity that we've seen all over Pinterest.

My Second Grade Journal has a great tutorial on making these {HERE}

We'll begin by just focusing on tens and ones. First we'll have our kiddos move their cups and position two numbers side by side.

Then we'll have them pull the cups slightly apart to show the numbers and plus symbol. We'll explain that five tens is 50 and then you add eight ones to the 50.

Then we'll have them push the cups back together and explain that that's the sum. 50+8 is 58!

Here's another example just using one hundred. This will definitely be added once our kiddos have a firm grasp on tens and ones.

We wrote hundreds, tens, and ones on the bottoms of the cups for organization. We'll explain to our kiddos to place the hundreds cup down, then tens, and finally ones on top (we'll probably repeat hundreds, tens, and ones several times to help them remember the order :)

Hoping this will help keep the cups in the right spot!

At another site, Birmingham Grid for Learning, we found a Bead Numbers activity where students can create numbers using beads that represent hundreds, tens, and ones. You can have the computer create questions for you, or you can select free and create your own numbers.
