Happy February!

Happy February! I can't believe we are already more than half way through the month! We've had a lot of rain here in Oregon these last few weeks, but today and the next several days are filled with sun! I do enjoy winter and the snow, but I am tired of the cold rainy days!

Speaking of the snow, my family and I have had several opportunities to head to the mountain this winter. Here's a pic of us a few weeks ago :) 

Mt. Hood is just gorgeous during every season! My husband and I were able to complete a 3 day hike around it last summer and saw so many beautiful parts of this mountain. 

Okay, now for some school related things, and some new and updated freebies!

I have finally finished my sight word bingo sets. April and May have been added to my store and I have also added a bundle that includes all 9 sets.

This last month and a half my first graders have been working through their place value unit in math. I decided to add in some additional support and practice this year since this is such a heavy duty unit, and I really wanted my kids to have a firm grasp on place value. 

One skill that often can be a struggle is finding 10 more and 10 less than a number. Before I gave my kiddos this lesson from our math program, we spent a day practicing with Reusable Write and Wipe Pockets. I got mine several years ago at Lakeshore and absolutely love them! I use them in small reading groups and also during partner work in math. Each pocket was filled with the two worksheets below. You can click on them to download for free!

 We began by watching a few place value Khan Academy videos before I handed out the mats. I LOVE Khan Academy. Their videos are wonderful! After watching a few video clips we used our tens rods and ones pieces on the side with the tens and ones worksheet. We did lots of practice showing numbers and what 10 more/less looks like. Eventually I handed out dry erase markers and we completed the 10 more 10 less worksheet. When we got to the last part of the worksheet, I had my kiddos write their own number and also write 10 more/less than the number. 

I made a few review worksheets for our greater than and less than lessons. These have been in my store, but have been recently updated with different fonts. You can go HERE to download or just click on the pictures below!

                               

After several days of learning and practicing using the symbols, we used our reusable wipe off mats again and practiced with partners during a whole group lesson. 

There are so many ways you could use these with wipe off mats. 

I began this activity using the page with the larger symbols. We would start with the first symbol and I would show my students two numbers. Then they would write them on the correct side of the symbol. When we got to the second worksheet, I would give them one number, and they would need to put their own number following the symbol. The last box they could create their own greater than, less than, or equal to statement. If you would like these, just click HERE or the pics below!

IT'S SO NICE TO BE BACK!

Hi there it's Leslie! 

Happy 2020! Hope you all had a wonderful start to the new year! I took about a year off from blogging and it sure feels great to be back! 

My goal this year is to post once a month and share with you some new things I am incorporating into my classroom, freebies and anything else I love and think you'll love too!

Here's a little number practice that I'm using in my classroom this week. I'll be using this in a small group setting with some of my students that need a little extra practice counting and recognizing numbers. These sheets can be cut into fourths and stapled into mini booklets. The kids will practice counting the numbers using the 10's frames, find the correct number below and daub it with a bingo dauber. Using bingo daubers will definitely make this extra practice more fun!

I've created on set that focuses on finding numbers 21-40 and another set that focuses on numbers 41-60. I will be sharing more sets in the next few months! Each set has answer sheets, with the correct answer underlined, if needed.

These last few months I've been working on several new bingo sight word sets that are now in my store! Each set uses 25 different sight words and contains 30 different bingo boards! This is a great whole class sight word practice activity. These are also great when you have a substitute and need a time filler. Happy December!

Hi It's Leslie here!  Hope your December is off to a great start!  I've been busy with my kiddos and trying to get all of our December projects complete in only 2 weeks!  YIKES!  The week after next is filled with gingerbread activities from our Gingerbread Galore pack!  My first graders just love when we have a week filled with gingerbread lessons tied into our math and reading.

I wanted to share some information about several new products we've added to or store!   

CVC short vowel cards

Each set contains:

*Lowercase letter cards a-z (use to build CVC words) 
*CVC picture cards 
Word cards that match the picture cards

I like to use these cards with my large hanging pocket chart.  My first graders can easily place them into the pockets and they enjoy matching the words to the correct picture or building the words using the letter cards.  These are put out at my pocket chart station during my Literacy station rotations.  

Erin likes to use these cards with her kindergartners using her Show and Tell Apron.

Sight Word Assessing & Some Random Freebies!

Happy Monday!  It’s Leslie here and I am so glad to be back online!  My internet has been intermittent for that last two weeks!!! L  

Turns out it was our router, and I'm FINALLY back on!  I’ve had this post in the works and am finally able to share with you all.

Here's how I assess my students on their sight word knowledge. 

Using our Read the Rainbow Sight Words pack I assess my kids weekly.  Our first graders are assessed in our small reading groups 

(I am currently assessing nine students). 

 Our pack has 11 lists with 20 words on each list (first 220 Dolch words).  You can find this pack {HERE}.  The white cards below are on my word wall.  Each card has a colored icon that corresponds to the colored list.  The cards on colored construction paper are what I use to assess my kiddos.  Each list is copied on a different color.  I have an extra set of these cards and my first graders often practice with these cards during their literacy station rotations.

 

After I asses my students, they are given a list to practice at home for the week.

  

I have a poster displayed near my small group reading table and each student has a numbered sticker.  I place their sticker on either side of the number that corresponds to the list that they are currently working on. 

They move along the rainbow as they pass their list.

And here are a few random freebies!  I used this missing addend worksheet with my first graders last week.  The answers are on the bottom and my students just crossed them off as they filled in the missing addends.

Here are a few random non-school related freebies.  These two printables are both saved in a 5x7 format and are meant to be framed. Writing down a weekly dinner menu is a MUST for me and I typically plan my meals on Saturday for the following week.  This little menu printable can be placed in a 5x7 frame.  I display it in my kitchen.  I use a dry erase marker and write on the glass.  The other is a countdown to Christmas.  I have both in frames and LOVE that I can just write on the glass!  If you'd like a copy just click on the pictures below to grab your freebies!

Alphabet Link Up

Happy Saturday friends! Since the fabulous Abby is having her Alpha-BOOM week, we thought we'd link up and share a new idea for introducing the alphabet to your kiddos! Since Erin is now going to be teaching kindergarten, this will be the first thing she does in her new classroom. We've spent the last few weeks creating our biggest product yet, our new ABC Bootcamp pack! We are currently LOVING Show and Tell Aprons!  If you're not sure what they are just look on Pinterest or Google.  Since we'll be using them in our classrooms next year, we're creating card sets that can easily fit the aprons.  If you don't have an apron, these can easily work with pocket charts too, or can be used at a table for a center activity!

Another new item added to our store is our

 Read the Rainbow Sight Word Pack.  

This is a unit to help teach and master the first 220 sight words based on the Dolch Word List. Each list has a color, and as the students master reading their list, they move through the colors of the rainbow. This is set up so that you can easily make this work for you!  We created it in March, and used it toward the end of last school year.  

Our kids just loved it! 

Look for a post in September about how we incorporate this into our reading instruction.

Here's a freebie to use with our Rainbow Sight Words pack.  This sheet could be used for kiddos to track the list that they are currently on.  You could use this sheet several ways.  One idea would be to  place a sticker on the number of the corresponding list that they've mastered.

We're updating our numbers, colors, and shapes posters in our classrooms so we added our new designs to our store!  They are full size, but can easily be printed 2 or even 4 to a sheet if you want to make them into flash cards.  On a mac when you select print, just go to layout and change how many pages per sheet.

Thanksgiving themed freebies

Well we've got report cards and conferences right around the corner so this week we're finishing up assessments and managing to fit in some thanksgiving themed activities.  We though we'd share some freebies with you all in case you need some last minute Thanksgiving themed activities!

We're constantly changing up our paper practice and word work centers and always looking for new ideas.  Here's one we just created:

The first page is the code page for our kiddos to use while solving the secret word pages.  The second page contains our spelling words for the week.  If you use Treasures and are on Unit 2 week 3, then this will be perfect for you!  Don't use Treasures?  We've included a sight word page as well! Just click the pictures above to download!

ABC order is another skill we're working on with our first graders.  We have been having our kiddos sort up to eight words at a time.  Below are recording sheets and two sets of Dolch words.  The last set of eight words are our Treasures sight words for the week and the previous week.

Thunder and Lightning Oh My!

We just finished our water cycle/weather theme unit that we've incorporated into our classrooms and we wanted to share a few thunder and lightning activities that we did last week with our first graders.

Here's a great non fiction book. There is quite a bit of information, so we read bits and pieces to our first graders.

Since we've been talking a lot about author's purpose, we discussed with our kids that the author wrote the above book to inform.

We also read the book below and talked about how the author wrote this book to entertain.

After reading and discussing thunder and lightning we showed our students pictures of lightning Click the picture below if you would like a PDF of lightning pics!

Just in case some of our students hadn't heard thunder, and to remind them of the sound it makes, we downloaded thunder sounds and saved them to our laptops to listen to after we displayed the lightning pictures.

Finally after watching and listening to thunder and lightning, we made lists on our whiteboards of adjectives that describe thunder and lightning. Then our first graders filled out the worksheet below by writing an adjective in each box that describes thunder and/or lightning. Just click the worksheet below if you'd like a copy!

We ended the week discussing the different types of weather that we've learned about and our first graders completed the writing below. They wrote what type of weather they liked and why it was their favorite. Example, "I like sunny weather because I can play outside with my friends."
